Australian researchers believe they may be on the verge of developing an oral contraceptive for men that would not affect long-term sperm health or negatively influence sex drive, according to a new study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science and reported by Agence France Press. The new drug would work by blocking two proteins that control the transport of sperm during ejaculation, rendering a man temporarily infertile without disabling sperm cells or influencing hormone levels. Researchers say the drug could be developed as a safe and reversible contraceptive within the next 10 years.
