The number of African-American lives that could be saved annually with better access to health care and fewer deaths from homicide, AIDS and other health issues, according to former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher in a recent Health Affairs report. He singles out men in middle age, who are generally not eligible for Medicare and Medicaid when they’re most likely to develop heart disease, diabetes and other serious conditions.
