HIV-positive men in sub-Saharan Africa are not accessing HIV/AIDS treatment as often as women, according to a study published in PLoS Medicine and reported by Voice of America News (VOA). Edward Mills, Canada research chair of health sciences at the University of Ottawa and author of the study, said that men often feel shamed by their positive status, leading them to deny antiretroviral treatment in favor of traditional and cheap medicines. Women, on the other hand, do better with health care because they are more in tune with their bodies and learn their HIV status during care for pregnancy.
