A May study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that taking certain antidepressants during the last three months of pregnancy could cause newborns to go through a brief period of withdrawal. However, symptoms are mild and most last less than two weeks, says Deidre S. Maccannon, MD. “Expectant moms and their obstetricians should weigh the benefits of depression treatment versus the apparently mild risks.”
