Australian HIV groups are calling on the government to lift a national ban that prevents HIV testing kits from being sold for at-home use, The Sydney Morning Herald reports. In Australia, a vigorous debate about at-home HIV testing has ensued following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s July 3 decision to approve the over-the-counter sale of the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test. Manufactured by OraSure Technologies and available at U.S. pharmacies this October, the oral swab–based test gives results in 20 to 40 minutes. Australian activists are pushing their lawmakers to reconsider legislation that bans at-home testing for serious diseases. However, reports indicate that the national ban hasn’t prevented some Australians from purchasing the OraQuick test online.
