Tired of dull-as-dishwater hair, but don’t have cash for a salon visit? Have no fear! This and a number of other hair-health problems can be fixed with a few simple household ingredients. Use these do-it-yourself treatments from stylist.com, and in time, you’ll be able to coax your hair back to looking like the healthy mane you so fondly remember.
The Problem: Dry Scalp
The Fix: High-fat, high-protein ingredients nourish a thirsty scalp. Blend half a cucumber, half an avocado and a third of a cup of sour cream. Next, massage the mixture into your scalp with a large cube of eggplant. Cover your hair with a shower cap for 30 minutes and finish with a cool rinse. This scalp-soothing mix also moisturizes hair follicles—and the cold water leaves hair shiny.
The Problem: Brittle, Damaged Hair
The Fix: A large dose of cholesterol and mixed oils helps strengthen fragile hair. Combine these oils from three primrose oil capsules, 4 tablespoons of olive oil and three egg yolks with 1 packet of gelatin melted in half cup of hot water. Then saturate your hair and scalp with the mixture and cover with a shower cap. Leave the mixed oils in for 45 to 60 minutes. If you have time, use a blow-dryer to warm your wrapped hair, or take a hot bath. (The heat will open your pores and allow the oil mixture to melt into your hair shaft roots.) Luxuriate in this indulgence; then rinse.
The Problem: Oily Hair and Scalp
The Fix: Herbal infusions work best for oily hair. Why? Because they don’t contain silicones found in conventional conditioners, which can make hair even oilier. Dunk four chamomile tea bags into 3 cups of boiled water. Add 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spritz into your hair as often as needed, saturating roots to end. Then blow-dry and style as usual.
The Problem: Dull Hair
The Fix: Eliminate environmental and product buildup and then moisturize hair. Mix the juice of one lemon and 2 to 3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with one and a half cups of water and apply to hair, then rinse. This removes residue and neutralizes your hair’s pH balance. Next, moisturize: Beat two eggs, 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of olive oil then massage the mixture through dry hair. Cover with a warm towel for 10 minutes and shampoo out.
Bye-bye problems.
