Alcohol-based hand-sanitizing gels can reduce the spread of gastrointestinal (GI) illness among family members, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics. Families that used hand sanitizers also had 59% fewer cases of GI-related problems passed on from their preschoolers. However, the gels didn’t seem to prevent colds.
