A study by The Institute of Medicine (IOM) says that the largest barriers to HIV care are delayed diagnosis, sporadic use of antiretroviral therapy and untreated mental health problems, Kaiser Health News reports. The Office of National AIDS Policy (ONAP) commissioned the report in order to identify ways to measure the success of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. To improve the overall health of people with HIV, the study recommends increasing access to treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders. It proposes bolstering the availability of supportive services such as housing, transportation and food assistance. And the report recommends reinforcing current monitoring systems such as the Medicare and Medicaid claim systems in order to determine how the health care reform law affects people living with HIV.
