With efforts to legalize medical marijuana in Idaho at an impasse, state residents are increasingly procuring it in adjoining Oregon, the Idaho Statesman reports. The state of Oregon, which legalized medical marijuana in 1998, opened the process up to out-of-state participants in 2010. Out of the 57,386 people who have acquired cards from the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program licensing them to purchase medical marijuana in Oregon, 163 of them are Idaho residents. Others have moved from Idaho to Oregon to acquire the cards. All pot remains illegal in Idaho, with possession of 3 ounces or less a misdemeanor carrying a fine of up to $1,000 and up to a year of jail time; carrying larger quantities or growing it is a felony carrying up to $10,000 in fines and up to five years in jail. Law enforcement officials in both states expressed worry that the medical marijuana system might be abused to sell the drug for profit, noting that all 16 marijuana trafficking cases in the past six months have been from states with medical marijuana laws.
