Research shows that fish oil can help prevent cardiovascular disease by lowering cholesterol. Its high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids can also reduce hypertension. Although all fish contain these fats, oily cold-water fish—salmon, tuna, trout, mackerel and sea bass—are particularly rich sources.
Plan to eat a variety of oily fish twice weekly. If you have high blood pressure or worry about heart disease, add 1,000 mg fish-oil supplements, three times a day.
Fish oil may also help reduce the risk of cancers, control diabetes and ease symptoms of depression, lupus, psoriasis and eczema.
