Massachusetts sheriffs have publicly criticized the state’s decision to cut more than $1 million for HIV testing, education and doctor’s visits in county jails, Boston.com reports. The sheriffs claimed that eliminating these programs may threaten the health of inmates and their communities. Pressured by federal cuts, Massachusetts lawmakers have reduced the state’s overall HIV/AIDS prevention budget by $4.3 million—about 25 percent of the state’s annual spending on HIV prevention.
