To draw attention to New York City’s HIV/AIDS policies, more than 50 HIV-positive people and their supporters protested Robert Doar, commissioner of the city’s Human Resources Administration (HRA), on February 29, according to a VOCAL-NY statement. The protesters greeted Doar at his house with noisemakers, then rode with him on the subway to his office. The activists are challenging a proposed $10 million cut to the city’s HIV/AIDS food and housing budget. They’re also concerned about policy changes that could deny housing aid to homeless people suspected of illegal drug use, and about a leaked memo suggesting that people with HIV/AIDS could be forced into unpaid welfare-to-work programs.
