The National Association of People With AIDS (NAPWA) will commemorate National HIV Testing Day on Wednesday, June 27, by calling on residents and mayors of U.S. cities to raise awareness about HIV, according to a NAPWA statement. NAPWA founded National HIV Testing Day in 1995 and is now among the oldest AIDS advocacy organizations in the United States. NAPWA’s Mayors’ Campaign Against HIV seeks to expand free HIV testing initiatives in cities with the goal of increasing testing by 10 percent in each city each year for the next three years. Current U.S. estimates are that 21 percent of the 1.1 million people with HIV in the United States are unaware of their status.
