MASH can lead to serious complications.
When left untreated, MASLD and MASH can lead to liver fibrosis (development of scar tissue in the liver), severe scarring known as cirrhosis and a type of liver cancer known as hepatocellular carcinoma. In severe cases, MASH can cause liver failure and the need for a liver transplant. People with MASLD and MASH are also at higher risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
