Who is at risk for IBS?
Anyone can develop IBS, but women are twice as likely as men to develop the condition. People under 50 are more likely to develop IBS than those who are older. You may have a greater risk for IBS if you have:
- A family member with IBS;
- A history of stressful or difficult life events, such as abuse, in childhood;
- Having a severe infection in your digestive tract.
