When should I see a doctor?

You should see a doctor if you have a persistent change in your bowel movements or if you’re experiencing pain or any of the other symptoms of IBS. If you experience bleeding, fever, weight loss or severe pain, see your doctor right away, as these could be signs of a serious condition.

In addition to a physical exam, you may need other tests—such as blood tests, stool samples and X-rays—to confirm a diagnosis and rule out other diseases that mimic the symptoms of IBS. Here are some questions your doctor may ask:

  • Do you have any pain related to your bowel movements?
  • Has there been a change in the frequency of your bowel movements?
  • Has the look of your bowel movements changed?
  • How often do you have symptoms?
  • When did your symptoms start?
  • Are you taking any medication?
  • Have you been sick recently?
  • Have you recently had a stressful event in your life?
